The north wall of the officer's quarters was burnt during construction and it was decided to remove a few stones from the wall for archaeomagnetic dating. Prior to lifting, Dr Mark Noel has glued bubble levels in place to permit their exact re-orientation in the laboratory (archaeomagnetic dating depends upon the known drift of magnetic north, which is fixed when an object is heated above a certain temperature).
