In an attempt to run an all-weather operation, we acquired a polytunnel greenhouse, although we had to go all the way to Liverpool to get it. They are designed to be firmly anchored in the ground, but that would have violated that part of the archaeology we were not supposed to touch. Therefore, we built a scaffolding frame for the base and weighted down the polythene with sandbags and planks. We also decided to have two half-tents, rather than one big one. This worked most of the time, although the exceptional weather of the winter of 1990-91 sorely tried our defences. A visit to the site on Christmas Day 1990 after a gale found the plastic sheeting shredded and lying in small pieces all over the site.
In the view shown here, one of the polytunnels has been placed over the remains of the rampart of the primary fort to enable that part to be recorded in the rain and the officer's quarters to undergo some drastic heavy work.
Moving these things was great fun... if you like that sort of thing.
