The Barrack Block (Reconstructed)

This drawing reconstructs the view of the northern end of the Church Chare barrack at Chester-le-Street, looking towards the north-west corner of the fort (the tower of which is visible at the back). Note that although the officer's quarters (on the right) and the men's quarters (on the left, with a verandah) are built of different materials - the first of stone and the second of timber - there is no visible external difference, simply because the finished structure would have been rendered (essential to protect the clay-bonding of the stonework).
