Robert Henry Forster: The Monument

Forster's memorial

Forster and his wife are buried in St Michael's churchyard at Combeinteignhead and commemorated with a monument in the familiar form of a stylised Celtic cross. The symbol of the triangle within a circle is said to represent the Trinity. The inscription on the base of the cross reads:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
ROBERT HENRY FORSTER
M.A. L.L.B. CANTAB, F.S.A.
MARCH 10TH 1867 JUNE 6TH 1923
A FAITHFUL SON OF NORTHUMBERLAND
Then below that a memorial to his wife:
ALSO OF HIS BELOVED WIFE
MARGARET HOPE FORSTER
DIED 13TH AUGUST 1956
AGED 79 YEARS
Sadly, the cross leans forwards, now, perhaps as a result of Margaret's interment.
